Station 1 is the fire district's headquarters; however, it was not actually the original station. The current station opened in 1947, and in 1994, an addition was built to accommodate modern apparatus that are larger in size. Before Station 1 was staffed with 24-hour personnel, Station 1's second floor was originally the home of the Hill family. Lew, then a volunteer firefighter for Round Lake, lived there with his wife Doris, the fire department's only dispatcher at the time, and their children: Bruce, Brenda, and Bridgett. Doris passed away in 1995 and Lew is now retired and living out of state. Their son Bruce is keeping the tradition going as a contract firefighter with the district, as well as Bruce's son, Bruce Jr., who is a part time firefighter for the district.
Station 1 has a lot of history inside its walls. The fire district's first motorized fire engine, a 1929 built by Peter Pirsch & Sons in Kenosha,WI named "Old Pete," is quartered here as well as the first ambulance, a 1946 Chevrolet panel van named "Rescue 3". Station 1 is also the only station in the district to have its crew quarters on the second floor, which means it still has a fire pole. In December 2001 the district was presented an american flag by Justens Funeral Home. The flag was used to cover the body of Captain Terrence Hatton ,of F.D.N.Y's RESCUE 1, when his body was removed from the pile at the World Trade Center. Captain Hatton's flag is proudly displayed in a glass case in the training room and serves as a reminder to us all of the sacrifice that was made on 9/11.
Station 1 quarters 2 ALS ambulances, an ALS squad, an engine, a tender, a brush truck, a rescue boat, a rehab vehicle, The Quad 2 Command Van, 7 staff vehicles and a communications trailer for the Illinois Terrorism Task Force, I.T.T.F.. The station has 24 hour staffing consisting of 1 Captain, who is the shift commander, 1 Lieutenant, who is the station officer, and 4 firefighters. In late 2007 the district decided to always staff the station with 6 personnel due to the station covering districts 1 and 4. By having 6 personnel always on duty that usually allows for 2 jump companies to staff the equipment. During normal business hours (i.e., 8-5 Monday through Friday) station 1 also has the Chief, Deputy Chief's, the Fire Prevention Bureau, front office assistants, and a Public Education Coordinator are also in the station.
Station 1 is also the location where many department events, training, and meetings are held such as Open House, Board Meetings, CPR classes, and birthday parties. Station 1 can also act as an Emergency Operation Center (E.O.C.) in case of a major disaster. The crews assigned to Station 1 is responsible for covering the southern portion of the fire district, which consists of still districts 1 and 4. Station 1 covers still district 4 because currently there is no fire station in that still district; however, the fire district has purchased land for the additional station, and is currently in the planning stages to build station 4 with construction expected to start possibly in 2008 with a possible opening in late 2008 or early 2009. Station 1 also responds to fires in southern areas of Fox Lake, and Grayslake due to automatic aid agreements.
